Breathwork in Sydney: how to find your first session

A practical guide to trying breathwork in Sydney — what to look for in a facilitator, what to expect, and how to choose between 1:1 and group sessions.

Sydney has become one of the most active breathwork cities in the country. Studios in the Inner West, group journeys on the Northern Beaches, sunrise sessions on the harbour — there's no shortage of options. But for someone new to the practice, that abundance can be paralysing.

This is a short, honest guide to finding your first breathwork session in Sydney.

What "breathwork" actually means

The word covers a wide spectrum — from gentle pranayama in a yoga class to intense, hour-long active sessions. When most people in Sydney say "breathwork," they usually mean conscious connected breathing: a paced, two-part breath through the mouth, held for 30–60 minutes with music, in a guided, lying-down session.

It's somatic. It's active. And it works on the nervous system, not the intellect.

1:1 versus group

A 1:1 session is the most supportive way to begin, especially if you're holding grief, anxiety, burnout or a specific intention. You get a full screening, a personalised hold, and integration time afterwards. Sessions usually run 75–90 minutes.

A group journey is communal, slightly cheaper, and surprisingly powerful — the collective breath builds a field that's hard to replicate alone. Better for the curious, the experienced, or anyone who finds healing in being in a room with others.

If you're not sure, most facilitators (including us) offer a short complimentary call.

What to look for in a facilitator

  • Training lineage. Ask where they trained and how long they've been practising. Breathwork is intense work — experience matters.
  • Screening. A good facilitator will screen you for contraindications before your first session. If they don't, that's a flag.
  • Aftercare. Integration is half the practice. Look for someone who holds space after the breath, not just during.

On the Northern Beaches

If you're north of the bridge, sessions held locally save you the trek into the city. We run 1:1 sessions and community events across Manly, Mona Vale and Avalon — close to home, on schedule, no fluoro lights.
